The Jump Off

Best known of the Santa Cruz spots. 'The Lane' is a variety of quality reef breaks and point-breaks. Owing to its consistency and the fact it is sheltered from NW winds Steamer Lanes is one of them most crowded spots on the coast

Steamer Lane picks up pretty much any swell going but has the bonus of facing due south so is offshore in the prevailing NW winds. As an extra bonus the swell is a little more ordered as it wraps around the point and further polished by the kelp beneath.

The main spots at the Lane are:

Middle Peak

Series of inner and outer reefs that hold almost any size. Steep drops and shortish rides are the order of the day. The left is a little better but there is a potential for taking a beating getting caught on the inside.

The Point

Right-hander breaking off the point by the lighthouse. Gets hollow, heavy and busy.

The Slot

Thick, hollow wedging right that breaks in front of the cliffs and jump off spot.

Indicators

This is another right point break but on its day significantly better than the outside point. A performance wave, Indicators plays host to some of the World’s best surfers when it’s on - so don’t bank on getting too many waves!

The Steamer Lane spots work on a variety of swells with NW being better for Middle Peak and Indicators, W for the slot and the point being best on a South swell
