South Devon « England
1. Bovisand
Rare right-hand reefbreak that takes a huge SW swell to get going. Shallow and hollow when it's on, which isn't that often!
2. Wembury Bay
Lefthand point breaking off Blackstone Rocks. Can line up to form a long walling wave over the rock/sand bottom. Needs a big swell to work but can hold a fair size wave. Proximity to Plymouth means it can get busy. There’s also a righthander further up the beach breaking on the sandbar at the mouth of the River Yealm
3. Mothecombe
Beachbreak at the mouth of the river Erme. Takes a monster south coast swell to break but offers some shelter from the accompanying W/SW winds
4. Challabrough
Picks up a bit less swell than neighbouring Bantham but is less affected by a bit of W in the wind. The beach produces mostly lefts where as the point that works at low is a right
5. Bantham
Consistent spot picking up more swell than any other break in the area. Quality banks are provided courtesy of the River Avon which empties into the sea here. Surprisingly powerful, sometimes hollow and capable of holding a bit of size. There is a long right that breaks into the rivermouth at lower tides and a peak on the main beach
6. Hope Cove
Fickle right can sometimes be found on a big SW swell. Can get hollow.
7. Paignton Pier
Left and right off either side of the pier. East facing, so needs an easterly gale blowing down the channel to whip up the swell. Picks up more swell than the other Torbay spots
8. Gasworks
Left/right reef that sometimes works and a small stretch of beach
9. Dawlish
As anyone who has regularly taken the south coast train will know a fair bit of swell does get in here in the winter. Plenty of beach but a bit of an unknown.
10. Beer Point
Rare pointbreak that takes a truly huge SW swell to work
