Pointbreaks » Waves

PointbreakPointbreaks, as the name suggests, are waves that break around a point of land. Unlike other types of surf spots which work often best on direct swells, point-breaks are best on swells coming in from right angles which wrap around the headland and then hug the point. Long range / long period swells are best owing to their propensity to wrap.

Many of what are considered the World’s best waves are pointbreaks, most notably Jeffery’s Bay which offers a perfectly peeling, evenly tapered wall that reels it’s way along the length of the point. J-Bay displays all those characteristics that point waves are loved for – length of ride and a predictable walling section.

An interesting geographical feature of pointbreaks is that they are nearly always located on coastlines bordered by steep hills or mountains such as Chile or Madeira. Low lying regions tend to have very few true point breaks. Point breaks on any given stretch of coast also nearly always break in the same direction. For example the points in Chile are nearly all lefts as are those on the East coast of Australia.
