Hoping I could get some suggestions for areas in Portugal that are beginner friendly. Perhaps a nice cushy beach break with some lefts and a sandy bottom? I've been surfing for a few years, my boyfriend.....not so much. So a not so crowded beach with knee to waist high waves would be ideal. Throw in some beautiful scenery and authentic local cuisine and I am sold.

    Cheers,
    Laura

I can think of a list of places to avoid - Portugal home of some of the heaviest waves in Europe!

Santa Cruz between Ericeira and Peniche is OK, as are some of the Peniche breaks.

Just north of Lisbon is Praia Grande. Guincho is closer but gets real heavy!

Actually, just remembered. Costa Caparica, across the bridge from Lisbon. 10 miles of pretty mellow beachbreaks, a little train and more bars than you can shake a stick at!
