    I was trying to think of the most obscure surf destination but with decent waves. Looking at the map New Guinea seems to have it all - plenty of coast with good exposure and it's bang next to Indo so it must be pretty warm with plenty of reef action.

    So has anyone been there, are there any waves. I'm imagining it must be like Indo meets Fiji?

    No, Fiji opens to the South Pacific and most of Indonesia gets swell from the Indian Ocean.
    I surfed PNG in Feb this year, cannot find the spot on the spot name list. The swell comes to the north coast of PNG from the North Pacific, so it gets the winter swells that Hawaii gets. Season is Oct-Apr each year.
    Added advantage was that because it is 4 degrees latitude you don't get typhoons/cyclones/hurricanes. You do get powerful storms, but usually short ones.
    Best thing about PNG is that you buy the spot in the surf!

    plenty of all time places to surf in PNG for sure and also addded massive bonus is the awesome melanesian hospitality and friendliness - definitely a must to get to for sure. try Tupira (www.tupirasurfclub.com) out of Madang or Vanimo
